Album Review: Kyle Hollingsworth – SPEED OF LIFE 8/19/2014 - SCI Fidelity Records

What strikes me most about Kyle Hollingsworth is undoubtedly his versatility. In his third solo studio album, SPEED OF LIFE, the String Cheese Incident keyboardist spans a wide range of themes and genres, making the project a great listen for music lovers of all ages and tastes. According to Hollingsworth, “With this new album, I was trying to explore some traditional funk elements as well as pop sensibilities,” and he definitely succeeded. From the funky and jazzy instrumental tracks, such as “Pack It Up,” “Lucky Charms,” “Peregrino,” “World Girl Reprise” and “Racer X” to the lyrical ballad “All Around” and the synth-pop, afrobeat “Happening Now,” there truly is something for everyone here. With lyrical themes mostly covering love and life, the album is inspired by all aspects of Hollingsworth’s life, including being a husband and father, beer and mayhem (probably the four most important aspects of his life, as anyone who knows him will tell you). Specifically, “You’ve Got The World,” a funky dance track with a bit of electronica sprinkled in between verses, states “You’ve got the world, girl. Don’t let it bring you down,” while “Here We Go” talks about how the world keeps on turning and time keeps on passing, with a bit of a laid back island feel. “Ordinary” expresses the disdain of living an ordinary life and needing something new, incorporating a groovy four-to-the-floor dance beat, following a heavy, dark intro. Also of note, “Racer X,” a fast-paced instrumental with driving drums and bass and a wailing keyboard solo, sets a perfect tone for the album, and represents an appropriate opening track for an album titled SPEED OF LIFE.

Hollingsworth also brought on a master class of musicians to record with on this project, including fellow String Cheese Incident members Michael Kang (guitar) and Jason Hann (percussion), fellow Colorado band, The Motet, members Dave Watts (drums), Garret Sayers (bass), Gabriel Mervine (trumpet), Matt Pitts (saxophone) and Kim Dawson (vocals), Big Gigantic saxophonist Dominic Lalli, Elephant Revival vocalist Bonnie Paine, guitarist Dan Schwindt and vocalist LaDamion Massey.
SPEED OF LIFE will be released on the String Cheese Incident’s SCI Fidelity Records on August 19 and was recorded in Boulder, Colorado during the infamous Boulder floods of 2013. As any fan will attest to, Hollingsworth’s love for craft beer is no secret. He is a longtime home brewer and has held Kyle’s Brew Fest for five years and seven installments now. Through his festival and other beer themed tours, he has helped raise over $40,000 for Conscious Alliance, and Kyle’s Brew Fest is set for another blowout this Saturday, August 9 in Boulder, Colorado. Hollingsworth is also set to release three brand new craft beers, hand-picked by Kyle himself, along with three brand new tracks, also hand-picked by Kyle, to correspond specifically with each beer.
