Staff Picks: Our Best of 2012

We are blessed to have contributors from all over the world with different tastes and likes and loves in music.  As we grow each year we like to ask our writers, photographers, and contributors what they thought was the best of 2012.  Here are the select answers.
Bobby Martin, Moultonborough NH
Of Phish Examiner and Bobby Martin's Phishin' Trips

3 Favorite Albums: Phish Chicago '94... the David Bowie is monumental. There are points that seem as if they are playing Slave, David Bowie and 3 Blind Mice at the same time. Epic.
Neil Young: Psychedelic Pill (what I've listened to is amazing and judging by what I have heard about his 2012 shows, the Godfather of Grunge can still jam.)
Dr. John: Locked Down. SERIOUSLY GOOD music.

Favorite shows:
Phish Atlantic City 1-3, with the order going 2, 1, 3 in order of best to worst. Raging does not begin to describe what was going on during this three day run. That means on stage with the band and back on the strip with the rest of the circus.

Favorite Festivals:
I only went to two festivals and they were both stellar. All Good Festival had some great performances by Yonder Mountain String Band, Allman Brothers and Papadosio.
Catskill Chill was one of the best festivals I have ever been to. Hands down. It was an all out rage cage where artists and fans alike were having a blast. Sets by Melvin Seals and JGB, Lotus and Lettuce were highlights.

Biggest Surprise of the Year: PHISH JAMS at DICKS. And good ones at that. 2012 was a huge year for the band after some stepping stone years and growing pains. This summer, especially in Colorado, showed that they are still capable of blowing peoples' hair back on a nightly basis.

Best New Band(s) of the Year: Rack 'Em Let's Go. They aren't exactly a new band around the Boston party scene, but they just released their first album and can rip it. Imagine their shows like a frenzy of pirates watching the Boston Bruins at a local dive bar. It translates over to their music, and it works perfectly.
Kung Fu: They rip it up and lay down the funk hard. Tim Palmeiri plays the guitar just about as good as anyone out there and as long as they are playing, I'll be listening.
