Hangout Music Festival- Friday 5/18 - (Awards and Summary)

The ocean breeze chills my body while my spirit is consumed with sensory overload. Beauty and music is around every corner. Thousands dance in the sand consuming the medicine flowing from all stages from all directions. This is no dream, just the first official day of The Hangout Beach Musical Festival. The sold out attendees enjoyed a perfect day in Gulf Shores Paradise as bands from all genres worked hard, as fans played even harder in one symbiotic experience!
Without further ado here are Grateful Music’s Friday Night Awards and Photos:
Best Performance of The Day: goes to Umphrey’s McGee for their historic two hour set on the Hang Loose Stage. They did anything but- as they delivered a powerhouse performance.
Welcome to the Festival Circuit Award: goes to Brittany Howard and the Alabama Shakes. She led her talented group through a refreshing set in the mid-day heat. The bands dynamic sound mixed with her passionate voice was a surprise highlight. The music is perfectly one part funk and equal part Anarchy. I look forward to seeing them everywhere soon.
The Best Place To Get High Award: goes to the Carousel for the second year in a row.
The Best Sampling Catalog Award: goes to Yelawolf and his D.J. Who tore up the X-Box Stage. They mixed everything from Master of Puppets to Riders on the Storm. In a classy mood, Yelawolf paid tribute to M.C.A with a Beastie Boy tribute, rapping several classics to the delight of all.
Best Hair Award: goes to Coheed and Cambria’s guitarist Traves Stever for this 80's fro. He could also use a tad of just for men :) Although I enjoy their concept albums, unfortunately it did not translate well live.
The "For Real!" Award: goes to this cute guy sporting the panties.
The Best Picking of the Day Award: goes to Jake Cinniniger of Umphreys. His playing was hotter than the sand from start to finish with his insane solos. He was clearly a man on a mission....
The Most Original Attraction Award: easily goes to this log roll contest thing. It also doubles as a good way to look like an ass award.
The Dance Your Body Weight Off Award: goes to the electronic pioneers STS9. They took an already volatile mix of freaks and turned them out. At the X-Box stage fans swore that their face melted after every act, but I think they meant it specifically for STS9's infectious set!
The Best Look of The Day Award: goes to Ryan Stasik. Only a man that plays a bass so mean can get away with that mustache!
The Not A Bad Seat on The Beach Award: belongs to the Hangout Stage! Boasting crystal clear sound and double screens, one can enjoy any act to grace it's scenic platform from practically anywhere.
Stayed tuned for more fun coverage over the weekend and more serious content to come. Tomorrow looks only to improve and promises to be CHEESY.... S.C.I on the beach…..life is good.
